Best G. Loomis GLX rod for hollow bodied frogs/Carolina rig

Postby Rodster14 » Thu Apr 13, 2017 10:03 pm

I have a small boat and I only carry five rides three casting to spinning. I try to keep them as versatile as possible. I'm looking to add one of the new GLX rods to be used primarily for throwing hollow body and frogs (not Gunterville thick mat type frog fishing, but ore like sparse mats, open water). When not throwing a frog, I use this for throwing a 1/2 Carolina rig. Would the GLX 844C MBR 7' rod be the best rod for these applications?

i have the old mbr 844 glx and that one would be a good choice. good for anything in its weight range really except cranks. excels with jigs and single hook moving baits, IMO. great for dragging up to 3/4oz lead plus plastic.

i hear the newer version has a bit more tip which might actually be better for working the frog. not sure if it would be the best choice for dragging heavier c-rigs however.

I usually throw 1/2 ounce Carolina rig, with a reare 3/4 ounce. The 844C should be fine for that, shouldn't it?

Definitely. I throw 1 ounce c-rigs all the time, and the 844 doesn't blink.

844 used to be the staple rod for frogs and c-rigs. will work fine.

Have you fished the old MBR 844 GLX? If so, would you mind comparing the two? Im interested in trying the new GLXs and I think the 844 would be the one id get.

Thanks,

I'm sorry, but I've only fished the old one, and I gave it as a gift a couple years ago to a friend who did me a major kindness.
