longest casting baitcast reel+rod +line combo for 3/16-1/2?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

My reel will outcast any of the ones mentioned. The only problem is it's not much good for fishing - Just casting.

This is a Lew Perkins distance casting reel. Perkins, of Dayton, Ohio made approximately 20 of these reels. It will throw a 1/2 oz. lure well over 100 yards.

Wow, that's awesome ROG! I'm gonna have to do a little research on those. I'm really curious to how it works and its braking mechanism.

The braking mechanism was different weights of oil. If you needed to slow down the spool (based on the weather conditions, humidity, etc) you used heavier weight oil on the spool bearings. The line is so thin that you can't touch the spool during the cast or it will break. After the cast you have to walk to the casting plug while reeling in the line, or you will break the line.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting. And thanks Van for posting that link. I must have missed that thread. It's gonna make for a nice read when I get a moment to relax and enjoy it.

its kinda fun to note that the discussion is generally going in the same direction many years on.

it's certainly spark my interest in the DC reels, and also a new found respect for Abu reels.

I will probably source for one Abu reel, and new bearings and get one of my uncles to sit down with me and supertune that thing, to see if I can cast as far.

and thanks everybody for the contribution. really insightful.

Yes, they backlash. Less frequently and generally more easily corrected.

Agree and true! Very few backlashes and definitely less than with any other reel I've used!

I've found the same. Generally I only get backlashes when I have the tension a little loose and I'm throwing into the wind. Other than that I can generally give it the heave-ho with little thumb pressure and make it sing

update... I just ordered a daiwa ballistic t3 and a 8ft med action fast tip micro guide rod.
So hopefully I will be fishing the T3 by next weekend and give some results.

I very seldom backlash a reel to the point where the overrun is not easily remedied...doesn't matter the brand or braking type. To me, the master is still the opposable member on my casting hand.

nice, I'm anxious to hear your reviews on your new rig
Questions: What line are you spooling it with? What rod manufacturer did you go with?

My favorite combo is a Core 101 or Zillion Type R on a Cumara 711MF. My best casting rig for the weight range. However, I throw 30-65 braid and not sure how it would change with 14# mono or Fluoro. The 30# braid is obviously the longest caster. The reels seem to be equal in casting performance of both distance and lack of backlashes but the R is much smoother on the retrieve with reaction type baits.

Well I pitted the t3 ballistic and a 8ft micro guide rod vs a cheap daiwa exceler with a 7 ft lamiglass rod.
Honestly throwing 1/4 weighted trick worms there is really no difference in casting distance. The T3 ballistic does take less effort to cast. This is using 12lb mono. Now with a heavier bait it might be more. The drag on the T3 ballistic is very smooth.
