SV103 - 6.3:1 or 7.9:1?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

SV103 - 6.3:1 or 7.9:1?

Postby Big-Bass » Fri Mar 17, 2017 11:01 am

Which one and why? This may be the last of the TD-Z/OG Zillion incarnation reels...so which one to buy? Some of the "kids" on here may be too young to remember when 6.3:1 was "high speed" prior to about 2006/2007. Thanks!

Depends on the use. My first ever baitcaster over $200 was a 5 speed because I thought I could always reel faster and loved crankbaits. I was very wrong. Now my light cranking setups ALWAYS have a 7 speed, and my deep cranking or chatterbaits work the same, but I would prefer a 6 speed. If I could only pick 2 ratios, it would be a 6 speed and an 8 speed, but if I could only pick one it would be the 7 speed.

This all being said, it comes down to what you are using it for, Daiwa's 6.3 SV103 isn't horribly slow, so for any moving baits it will be great and could function for bottom style baits. The 7.9 isn't horrible fast either though, and would probably account for tons more landed fish and good hooksets if you are mainly fishing jigs, t-rigs, etc. along with being able to handle moving/resistance baits too because the OG Zillion frame is tough and the aluminum sideplate only makes it stronger.

All depends on use. I use my 7.9 to burn baits on top. Otherwise, I would have got the 6 gear.

I have 4 copies of this reel ... 6's are not for me. Just not my preference. Given a slightly smaller diameter spool than the OG Zillion I converted 2 to 7:1 gears for moving baits and left the other 2 at 7.9 for bottom bouncing or pitching.

Good luck with your decision. They are amazing reels at any speed imo. Enjoy !
