One TOTALLY STOCK reel to rule them all

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

I don't know how much fishing I would do if I couldn't modify reels. I might look into another hobby.

Met MGL gets close to $300 on sale or JDM and would be hard to beat. As a reel where you throw relatively light lures (e.g. 1/4oz total weight) yet need cranking power one would be hard pressed to beat a XG

No experience with the SV103 or new Zillions. Was disappointed with my SV105 until Ian worked on it. Very fond of the Helios Air, but a reel that has really been impressing me even more is the Primmus Xi HS. Both the Helios Air and Primmus are new and factory stock. Not even cleaned. The Primmus is the best set-and-forget reel I have every used...and I have Chronarchs, Curado Es, Lew's, Diawas and a few other brands. Don't know yet how light a lure it can handle. It will cast a spinnerbait straight into a stiff wind with no problems of over-running or backlashing. I set the brakes and adjusted spool tension when I took it out of the box. Never had to touch it until the last time I had it out. Discovered I had somehow backed off spool tension. (I run it very light to begin with.) Reset it and back to same trouble free casting. Makes your $300 limit with ease. Heck...I got my last two for $104.10 when manventureoutpost was selling them off. Best money I ever spent on any reel. Even better than my new $98 Curado 51E. :big grin:

First cast with the Helios Air and I said to myself, "Wow. This thing can cast." However, it isn't quite as good as the Primmus when it comes to never touching the settings. The Primmus' casting distance ain't shabby either. It will launch a 3/8 oz. popper a long, long way.

Ah. It was the "rule them all" part that threw me. Never mind. :big grin:

For under $300, Daiwa SV103H/HL!

With stock spool, it's a casting machine for 1/2oz e.g. megabass vision 110
"North" of America...

You are tough!

Let's make it under $300, so we can see what affordable reels folks choose.

Any other restrictions? Current production only?

Hahaha You are so tough! New in box, available new today or within the last five years.
I read so much here about how guys modify their reels after they get them that I was wondering which reel they'd choose if they couldn't modify anything.
I'm looking for their one workhorse reel that can do everything.

Alright, here's my laser focused on these parameters:

MSRP $300 max, CURRENT PRODUCTION - Zillion SV TW, also awesome, Chronarch MGL.
MSRP $200 max, CURRENT PRODUCTION - Tatula SV, also awesome, Curado 70.

Agreed.
