Anyone tried DIY spools? $29-$40 BFS spools!

Very impressed with the new KKR Long cast spool for the Daiwa Alphas SV TW. It is much lighter and has a thinner, shorter fixed inductor making it faster than the stock SV shallow spool version. The line capacity is a tad more than the stock shallow spool.

I paid $65 and got it in a little over a week from China.

KKR is 4.88g
Alphas Shallow spool (stock) is 12.91g

I think this thing will bomb a little Megabass IXI shad or Super-Z. The stock SV spool seems too braked to me.

Dang if only the current discounts applied to the Alphas spool. I picked up the KKR Tatula 80 and Rays 34mm HLC, before I saw this one. Was thinking about the KKR Metanium, but I'm not sure if 2 brake hubs would be enough.

That KKR spool looks nice. I would like to know how it feels, did you change the bearings, etc. once you get some time on it. I have had 2 or 3 Aliexpress spools, some have a bit of raspy sound but most cast light stuff very well.

Again, would like to know more as you use it and try a variety of lures. Interested in the line you go with too.

How much 8lb sniper/tatsu can it hold?

It says no mono (which I get) but I thought fluoro doesn't absorb water?

I put 60yds of 7lb sniper on the KKR Alphas spool and it filled it maybe halfway. I was surprised at how much this spool will hold. I read that it says to only use braid, but I am using fluoro since I have never had a problem with spool deformation. I am going to throw little crankbaits that cast a long way like the ISI shad type 3. Prob go out Thursday and give it a try with a 7'6" L rod I built.

Dang I feel sad now to get Alphas 800s instead of wait for this spool. Maybe I’ll wait until it goes on sale like other spool?

Edit decided to order one in red, I can use this spool on my right hand compare to shallow left.

I love the little 80 and 70 models because of the aluminum side plate, they are little tanks. This spool absolutely transformed the 80 into a dynamite reel for my type of fishing, which is throwing relatively small tubes and jigs for smallmouth in the river. It was good before, now it’s great.

I liked the first spool so much I ordered another one for the other 80 I have and one for the 70 as well.

It used to be a little slow, but I have placed many orders before the war, and they all got to me in the end.

I actually have ordered other spools from SDS prewar and this spool arrived in about the same amount of time as the ones before the war. They will estimate one to two months out but every spool has been to me right around the one month mark, sometimes a little earlier.


I too was very happy to see them listing stuff on eBay again.

It's not water absorption that is so dangerous(though that is a contributing factor). It is the stretch when reeling in under the weight of a fish. When the line stores on the spool in a stretched condition, the pressure that it creates is what causes the spool to deform.

Pretty fast shipping from China, when I ordered they scheduled to arrive April 6, then upgraded to 3rd. Today I got the spool in my hand. The spool hold good amount of line, I tried with leftover 12lb sniper about 80 feet and got to only about half of spool. Should be good for 10lb sniper that I ordered for this Spool.

Pretty happy with this spool, open up the Alphas pretty good. This is not light lure by any mean but I can imagine would be good for some 1/8oz lure. I cast in pretty windy situation, dial set to 8 and no problem whatsoever.

Just got my spool in today and I got to say it cast 110+1 jr with ease.... easier than the alpha 800s spool. It will be my 3/8 oz jerkbait reel.

Has anyone actually deformed one of these spools ever? I know it specifically says to not use nylon or fluorocarbon for the KKR, just wondering if anyone had actually experienced spool deformation or not...
